I always start Logo design project with collecting as much information about company as possible: company profile, products, services and of course company market/clientele. Based on collected information I create several mockups - design ideas that potentially can become an image to represent your business. I always tell my clients that I'm not selling pre-designed logos, I'm designing logo for your company from scratch and creation of the successful logo is always a result of the communications between designer and client!
advice to clients:
Before start work on logo project I always advice my clients to study competition and potential clients. Studying competition, you shouldn't try to create “something similar” and certainly not to repeat somebody's mistakes, but to create something different that will stand out from the list of competitors. Study your potential clients - age group, gender, even location of your clientele are very important factors in creation of new logo.
You should remember that logo is one of those projects where less is usually more. You can create complicated illustration describing specifics of your business in details and ad tagline with list of your services, but remember that some of the most successful logos are simple – golden arches of McDonald's logo are recognized all over the world, and this image has nothing to do with hamburgers...
